Linz AI model - the European answer to ChatGPT?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has long since established itself as one of the key technologies of the 21st century. With the emergence of chatbots such as ChatGPT, developed by the company OpenAI, AI became suitable for mass use for the first time and found widespread application in various areas. But now the following news is making people sit up and take notice: An AI model, developed by Sepp Hochreiter at Johannes Kepler University (JKU), claims to be not only better, but also more resource-efficient than ChatGPT.

Linz AI model on the move

In order to strengthen Europe in global competition, Sepp Hochreiter, co-founder of modern AI research and head of the Institute for Machine Learning at the JKU Linz, founded the company NXAI together with entrepreneur Albert Ortig. The project receives support from Pierer Digital Holding, part of the KTM Group, among others. The JKU Linz is also on board as an important research partner. With over 400 students on the "Artificial Intelligence" degree programme, the university has already sparked a strong interest in AI research and development.

Europe's answer to AI dominance

The core idea behind the Linz AI model, which is based on the xLSTM technology, is to offer a more efficient and faster alternative to the common transformer models on which ChatGPT is based. While the latter consume enormous computing resources and become slower and less accurate for complex tasks, xLSTM should be able to process the semantics of texts better and therefore achieve better results with less computing effort. However, Albert Ortig emphasises that the aim is not to compete directly with the leading AI companies such as OpenAI, Microsoft or Google, but rather to develop a European alternative that will make Europe more independent in the global AI market.

Overall, it is clear that efforts to develop a European AI alternative are still in their infancy, but have the potential to change the AI landscape in the long term. With Hochreiter's expertise, the support of companies and the research infrastructure at the JKU Linz, a promising start has already been made.
