Above all, the Mitteregg-Haagen-Sand Youth Fire Brigade provided a sporting highlight: with a best time of 39.19 seconds on the obstacle course, the girls secured the title of World Vice-Champions. In the mixed category, Winden-Windegg achieved an outstanding 3rd place, whilst St. Martin im Mühlkreis came 4th. A total of 58 youth groups from numerous nations competed against one another, which makes these top placings all the more significant.
Behind every success lies dedicated voluntary work
As impressive as the medals and placings are, they tell only part of the story. Behind every successful competition lie countless hours of voluntary work. Week after week, coaches devote their free time to training children and young people, supporting them and preparing them for competitions. They impart not only firefighting knowledge and sporting skills, but also values such as responsibility, discipline, team spirit and reliability.
The successes in Šumperk are therefore far more than just sporting achievements. They are the visible result of a culture of active volunteering that has formed the foundation of the Austrian fire service for generations. Without this voluntary commitment, there would be neither such a strong youth fire service nor the qualified new recruits on whom the fire services can rely in the future.
A strong fire service: an asset to society
Volunteer fire services are far more than organisations dedicated to firefighting and technical rescue. They are an indispensable part of social life in Austria. In rural areas in particular, they shape community life, foster cohesion and take on responsibilities far beyond their actual duties.
The youth fire service plays a key role in this. It inspires young people to take up meaningful voluntary work, teaches important life skills and strengthens awareness of mutual aid and solidarity. Today’s young people will become the emergency responders, officials and trainers of tomorrow.
Šumperk’s successes are therefore not only a cause for celebration for the groups involved, but also a powerful testament to the value of voluntary work. They impressively demonstrate that investment in the youth fire service is always an investment in the safety, cohesion and future of our society.
