Haus des Meeres breaks visitor record

House of the sea

The Haus des Meeres in Vienna has set a record: Almost one million guests visited this special zoo in 2023.

Haus des Meeres enjoyed a large influx of visitors last year: with just over 930,000 people, it almost broke the one million mark. This corresponds to an increase of around ten per cent compared to 2022 and even 40 per cent compared to the time before the pandemic.

"The construction of the extension with a larger visitor capacity and new animal worlds, such as the 360-degree shark tank and the recently opened mangrove area in combination with many, often cute young animals, has really increased the popularity of our Aqua Terra Zoo," says Director Michael Mitic and is pleased: "This has enabled us to inform even more people about the animal world, its diversity, its beauty, its uniqueness and its necessary protection."

Investments are self-financed

The tropical house was renovated in 2023. This year, the renovation of the department for tropical freshwater fish and the construction of a new venomous snake enclosure are on the agenda. Everything will be financed from admission fees, which will not be increased this year due to the growth in visitor numbers.
