This packaging innovation could bring about significant changes

Packaging is part of our everyday lives at every turn. At the same time, there is a growing demand for solutions that conserve resources and reduce the use of plastic. The French Hébert Group and the international technology group ANDRITZ have come up with a promising response to this challenge in the form of a joint technology for dry-pressed fibre products. This technology enables the production of packaging made from natural cellulose fibres and could replace numerous plastic applications in the future.

Cellulose instead of plastic

Demand for sustainable packaging is rising steadily among both consumers and brand manufacturers. Alternatives to conventional plastic packaging are being sought, particularly in the food, cosmetics and consumer goods sectors. Against this backdrop, the Hébert Group and ANDRITZ have further developed what is known as Dry Moulded Fibre (DMF) technology. This involves moulding natural cellulose fibres into three-dimensional packaging solutions that are recyclable and biodegradable.

The technology opens up a wide range of applications – from trays and lids to packaging for high-quality consumer goods. At the same time, fossil-based raw materials are replaced by renewable or recycled fibre materials.

Resource-efficient right from the start

A key advantage lies in the production process itself. Whilst conventional fibre-forming processes require large quantities of water, Dry Molded Fiber technology requires virtually no water. This not only significantly reduces water consumption but also lowers the energy requirements of production. Complex drying stages can largely be dispensed with, which makes production even more efficient.

The combination of low resource consumption and high production speed makes the technology particularly attractive for large-scale industrial application. This creates a sustainable alternative that can also be economically viable.

Driving innovation forward together

The Hébert Group began developing new solutions for sustainable packaging several years ago. The growing demand for environmentally friendly alternatives eventually led to the creation of a dedicated business division for dry-moulded fibre products. ANDRITZ’s expertise in plant engineering, process optimisation and fibre technologies has further accelerated this development.

The first products made from dry-pressed fibres are already being manufactured. At the same time, the partners are working to explore further applications and production possibilities in order to make the technology usable across a wide range of industries.

The collaboration between Hébert and ANDRITZ demonstrates how technological innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand. Recyclable and biodegradable fibre products help to reduce single-use plastic and close material loops. At the same time, they provide companies with new opportunities to achieve their sustainability goals and meet the growing demands of customers and regulators.
