Young people shape the future - socially, sustainably, sensibly

Civilian service, proHolz, JUMP, voluntary environmental year

In Austria, community service offers a valuable opportunity to actively take on responsibility and participate in a wide range of areas. While this has so far mainly been in social areas, proholz Upper Austria will be offering the Voluntary Environmental Year as an exciting alternative from 2025.

Opportunities for community service

Community service volunteers work in a variety of areas, especially in the social environment. The most common areas of deployment include

  • Rescue services
  • Social and disability care
  • care for the elderly
  • Hospitals

Voluntary environmental year as an alternative

The Voluntary Environmental Year (FUJ) is an attractive alternative for young men and women who would like to get involved in environmental protection and nature conservation. This programme makes it possible to work in areas such as environmental protection and nature conservation, sustainability and development cooperation. The FUJ is recognised as a full replacement for civilian service, provided it lasts at least ten months.(jugendumwelt.at)

proHolz Upper Austria as a new placement centre from 2025

From September 2025, proHolz Oberösterreich, in cooperation with the JUMP association, will be expanding the Voluntary Environmental Year programme in Linz. This initiative is aimed at young people aged between 18 and 30 who are interested in the forestry and timber industry and would like to become active in the areas of environmental education, climate protection and sustainability.

Areas of activity at proHolz Oberösterreich

Participants in the FUJ at proHolz Oberösterreich can expect a wide range of tasks:

  • Assistance with events: Support in the organisation and implementation of events relating to the topic of wood.
  • Press relations and social media: Assisting with media relations and creating content for social networks.
  • Educational work: Organising excursions, workshops and lectures, especially for children and young people, to raise awareness of the importance of wood and sustainability.
  • Research and documentation: Creation of information material and documentation of projects.

Requirements for applicants

Interested candidates should have a basic knowledge of wood and a positive attitude towards the forestry and timber industry. Important qualities are communication skills, reliability, ability to work independently and enjoy working with children and young people. Confident use of common computer programmes is also an advantage.

The Voluntary Environmental Year at proHolz Oberösterreich offers a unique opportunity to get actively involved in environmental and climate protection and at the same time gain valuable experience in the timber industry. It is therefore a sensible alternative to traditional community service and enables personal and professional development.

#The aim of #schongenial is to direct young people's attention to nature and thus promote awareness of the basis of our existence. Invite, encourage and inspire! It will be interesting to see how the young community service volunteers experience their commitment and their voluntary year in the service of environmental and climate protection.

It's nice to see so many positive things:
