A shared goal for Freistadt
It is precisely with this aim in mind that the ‘Wir pflanzen Freistadt’ initiative has been developing steadily since 2021. What began with the aim of planting more trees in the town has already led to the planting of over 200 trees. Now the focus is on the heart of the town: the main square.
Plans include a green pergola with seating in the sandpit area, as well as six additional trees. This will create attractive shaded areas that will particularly benefit families and enhance the public space in a sustainable way without taking away any parking spaces. The project combines environmental measures with a clear urban planning vision: the main square should remain a place where people enjoy spending time, even on hot summer’s days.
To raise the necessary share of own funds for the project, the initiative is relying on crowdfunding and sponsorship. Initiator Wolfgang Roth emphasises that this model is built on broad support: “I am convinced that a great deal is possible in Freistadt if we stick together.” He describes his vision in these words: “Many local clubs and committed individuals are already on board. … If we manage to raise 35,000 euros together by the start of the new school year, our main square will be a better, more beautiful and more welcoming place for decades to come. I believe our lovely town is worth it.”
An example of community spirit in action
The initiative’s progress so far demonstrates the potential that lies in community engagement. More than 200 newly planted trees, the support of numerous residents, organisations and businesses, and the unanimous backing of the local council prove that sustainable urban development is particularly effective when it is a collective effort.
#schongenial, because this project combines climate adaptation, civic engagement and responsible urban design into a forward-looking model for local development.
