22 megawatts of capacity across around 20 hectares
The official ground-breaking ceremony has marked the start of construction for the new photovoltaic plant. Solar panels with an installed capacity of around 22 megawatts are to be erected across an area of approximately 20 hectares. This will make Feiting the site of the most powerful PV plant that Energie Steiermark has built to date.
The expected electricity output is correspondingly high: the solar park is set to supply more than 29 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity per year. According to the company, this is mathematically equivalent to the electricity needs of around 8,300 households. At the same time, the generation of renewable electricity is expected to save around 4,900 tonnes of CO₂ annually. Commissioning is scheduled for the second quarter of 2027.
When energy generation and agriculture go hand in hand
A distinctive feature of the project is the planned dual agricultural use. The area beneath and between the photovoltaic modules will not remain unused, but will serve as pasture for around 140 sheep.
The project thus demonstrates how large-scale solar power generation and agricultural use can be combined. The site is also located within a priority zone for solar power designated by the Province of Styria.
The electricity grid is also being made fit for the future
However, a high-capacity solar farm alone is not enough. The electricity generated must also be fed reliably into the grid. For this reason, the adjacent Feiting substation, operated by Energienetze Steiermark, has already been expanded. Around six million euros have been invested in this.
The expansion is intended not only to support the new PV park, but also to lay the groundwork for connecting further generation plants to the electricity grid in the designated priority zone for photovoltaics in the future.
A strong signal for regional solar power
With the project in Feiting, Energie Steiermark is significantly expanding its regional capacity for renewable electricity generation. At the same time, this #brilliant combination of photovoltaics, modern grid infrastructure and agricultural use clearly demonstrates the direction in which things can go: land is used for multiple purposes, electricity is generated where it is needed, and the regional energy supply becomes more independent and climate-friendly.
