Researching together, shaping together: The EU Citizen Science Prize

European Union Prize for Citizen Science, Ars Electronica, AEC, European Commission

Citizen science is playing an increasingly important role in scientific progress and social change. The European Union Prize for Citizen Science, organised by Ars Electronica on behalf of the European Commission, recognises outstanding initiatives that contribute to research through the active involvement of civil society.

What is the European Union Prize for Citizen Science about?

This prize recognises projects that actively involve citizens in scientific work - be it through intellectual contributions, knowledge exchange or the provision of resources. The aim is to bring science and society closer together and jointly develop solutions to current challenges. Topics range from digital humanities and environmental research to social science projects with participatory research.

Who can take part?

The call is aimed at projects that have already been completed or are at an advanced stage so that their scientific and social value can be assessed. Ideally, the projects should not be older than two years or have undergone significant further development during this period.

The deadline for submissions is 10 March 2025 and participation is free of charge.

Award ceremony and prize money

The award ceremony will take place during the Ars Electronica Festival in September 2025. A total of three main prizes will be awarded:

  • Main prize: 60,000 euros
  • Further prizes: 20,000 euros each

In addition, the winning projects will receive visibility on various platforms of Ars Electronica and the European Union to serve as role models for future citizen science projects.

How can you take part?

Interested parties can submit their projects via the official Ars Electronica submission platform. If you have any questions, please contact the organisation team at citizenscience@ars.electronica.art.

Why is this prize so important?

The European Union Prize for Citizen Science is a valuable initiative to emphasise the importance of citizen science. By recognising and supporting such projects, it strengthens the dialogue between science and society and paves the way for open and inclusive research.
