Impulses for the Cistercian Abbey of Lilienfeld

Lilienfeld, Cistercian Abbey, LEADER project

In the heart of the Mostviertel region, in the town of Lilienfeld, stands one of the largest and most impressive medieval monasteries in Central Europe - the Cistercian Abbey of Lilienfeld. Its historical significance makes it an unmissable destination for pilgrims and visitors alike.

As a main station along the Via Sacra, the traditional pilgrimage route from Vienna to Mariazell, the monastery attracts not only believers, but also history buffs and nature lovers.

The importance for the region

The monastery is also of great importance for the region's tourist attractions, especially along the pilgrimage routes. The Mostviertel is therefore not only suitable for hiking, but also for spiritual journeys and historical discoveries. The Cistercian monastery in Lilienfeld adds another dimension to this rich offer.

A look back and a step forward

The history of the abbey is just as fascinating as its architecture. As the favourite foundation of the powerful Austrian ruler Leopold VI and the long-standing workplace of the only patriarch of Venice north of the Alps, Johann Ladislaus Pyrker, Lilienfeld Abbey is closely linked to historical events and personalities. This heritage was further emphasised last year through a LEADER project.

This project structures the implementation of further measures and prepares tourist offers in order to establish Lilienfeld Abbey as an indispensable destination for visitors. Anton Gonaus, chairman of the LEADER region Mostviertel Mitte, is optimistic that this project will not only revitalise the abbey, but the entire region.

The Cistercian Abbey of Lilienfeld is not only a historical landmark, but also a lively centre for spiritual experiences and cultural discoveries. Targeted promotion and positioning will ensure that this jewel of history is preserved for future generations.
