In ecologically maintained gardens with compost heaps, beetle castles or mounds of dead wood, the small spiny hedgehog finds ideal conditions for living and hibernating. Unfortunately, hedgehogs are in increasingly bad shape: their populations have declined by up to 50 % in recent years. The main reason for this is the loss of suitable habitats due to increasing building development and dense fences, which hinder or injure them on their nocturnal migrations. Hedgehogs are therefore specially protected under both EU and national nature conservation legislation.
Free hedgehog gates for Leonding gardens
This is where a great initiative by the city of Leonding comes in: From mid-May, nature-loving Leonding residents can pick up a free handmade hedgehog gate from the Citizens' Service Centre. These practical culverts were made by the municipality's carpenters and will be handed out including fastening materials and assembly instructions. A total of 100 of them are available to connect gardens in a hedgehog-friendly way and enable the little animals to walk safely again.
We think it's schongenial when real nature conservation is possible right on your own doorstep with little effort.
