Too much fruit? It can turn out to be a good thing

Every year, countless apples, pears, plums and berries ripen in Vorarlberg’s gardens. Yet by no means all of them are harvested. A lot of valuable fruit remains on the trees or eventually ends up on the ground. The OGV Vorarlberg fruit exchange offers a simple solution to this. Under the motto ‘Share rather than throw away’, it brings together people who have surplus fruit with those who would like to make use of it.

The scheme is run free of charge by the participating fruit and horticultural societies throughout Vorarlberg. This ensures that regional fruit finds its way into kitchens, cider presses or jam jars, rather than going to waste.

The yellow ribbon makes all the difference

Another simple yet effective idea is the ‘Yellow Ribbon’ initiative. It signals that the fruit on this tree may be picked free of charge for personal use. So, anyone who spots a tree with a yellow ribbon knows that the owners want to share the fruit with others. The campaign helps to prevent food waste, promotes a mindful approach to regional food and, at the same time, strengthens community spirit.
