Inclusion starts in everyday life
Children with disabilities still face barriers in many areas of life. This applies not only to school, leisure activities or sport, but often even to everyday places such as the playground. Whilst other children swing, climb or go on the roundabout, they are often left with nothing but the role of spectators.
This is precisely why it is important to consider inclusion even in places where it has so far been lacking. Accessible play equipment is more than just an extra feature. It fosters interaction and enables children with and without disabilities to play together. In this way, inclusion becomes the norm from an early age.
Leonding is expanding its playgrounds
The town of Leonding is taking a pioneering role in this regard. It is in the process of gradually expanding its public playgrounds to include inclusive facilities. A new wheelchair-accessible roundabout has now been installed at the Hainzenbachstraße playground. It is already the second piece of inclusive play equipment in the town.
It all began with a wheelchair-accessible trampoline at the Remisenstraße playground in Doppl. With the new carousel, there is now yet another opportunity for children with and without disabilities to be active and have fun together.
Playing together, growing together
Inclusive playgrounds bring children together rather than highlighting differences. They enable shared experiences and show even the youngest children that diversity is a natural part of life.
