The scale of this project is immense: Rail Baltica will create a new high-speed rail link designed to connect the Baltic states directly with Central Europe in future. Now, a company from Upper Austria has secured a crucial contract for the project, thereby making its own piece of corporate history.

Record contract for domestic railway technology

voestalpine Railway Systems has secured its largest single contract to date for this major European infrastructure project. The contract is worth around 470 million euros and covers the supply of up to 1,000 high-speed and standard-speed points, as well as digital surveillance and monitoring systems.

Rail Baltica is regarded as one of Europe’s most significant railway projects. The new, fully electrified north-south link is set to connect the capitals of Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius with Warsaw, thereby integrating the Baltic states more closely into the European rail network. The line is designed for high speeds and is set to significantly speed up passenger and freight transport between Northern and Central Europe.

Digitalisation as the key to the future

For voestalpine, winning the contract represents not only a commercial success but also a strategic strengthening of its position as a provider of complete rail infrastructure solutions. In addition to the points, the framework agreements also provide for fully digital monitoring systems, which will enable continuous condition monitoring and thus increase the availability of the infrastructure.

The components will be manufactured at sites in Lithuania and Latvia. The first prototypes are due to be delivered as early as 2027. This means that voestalpine is involved at an early stage in a project that is regarded as a key initiative for European transport infrastructure.

A milestone for Europe and Upper Austria

Group CEO Herbert Eibensteiner described the contract as proof of the company’s technological expertise in the field of rail infrastructure. Franz Kainersdorfer, Member of the Executive Board responsible for Railway Systems, also sees this as an important milestone for the business unit’s further international expansion.

#It’s brilliant when local companies become part of an infrastructure project that is set to transform mobility in Europe in the long term and bring Europe closer together.
