Behind every discarded cup lies a problem
The figures show just how necessary this message is: more than 9,000 tonnes of rubbish were collected last year along Austria’s motorways and expressways. A large proportion of this cannot be removed by machine and has to be cleared by hand by ASFINAG staff, often right next to moving traffic. This poses a significant safety risk to the people who work every day to ensure that Austria’s roads remain clean and safe.
As well as the dangers to staff, litter discarded carelessly also harms the environment. Packaging and other waste pollute green spaces, endanger animals and incur high disposal costs, which are ultimately borne by the public. Even small items can become dangerous obstacles on the carriageway.
A message that concerns us all
ASFINAG’s campaign makes it clear that keeping Austria’s roads clean is not the responsibility of a single company, but a shared responsibility. Those who dispose of their rubbish properly not only protect nature, but also contribute to road safety and make the work of those who ensure safe motorways every day easier.
#schongenial, because this campaign raises awareness that responsibility starts with each and every one of us.
