The Varroa mite is one of the biggest challenges for beekeeping and the survival of bees. In addition to chemical treatment methods for combating the mite, an Austrian technical solution is becoming increasingly important: the Varroa Controller.

The device was largely developed by Ecodesign company, an Austrian company specialising in sustainable system solutions. The conceptual development and implementation were carried out under the direction of Associate Professor Dr Wolfgang Wimmer, who provided scientific and technical support for the approach of chemical-free, physical varroa control. The aim for Wimmer, who is also a passionate hobby beekeeper, was to create a residue-free, practical and controllable method that can be easily integrated into existing beekeeping workflows and thus enables the survival of bee colonies in an ecological way.
