The concept is simple: interested residents work together with their neighbours to look after small green spaces in public areas – for example, flowerbeds along streets or around street trees. They are supported in this by Green City e.V. and the City of Munich. In addition to free plant packs, there are workshops, practical tips and help with registration. You don’t need to be a gardening expert – what matters is the motivation to make your local area a better place to live.
The green sponsorships do far more than just improve the look of the area. Native plants promote biodiversity, create new habitats for insects and improve the urban climate. At the same time, new meeting places are created in the neighbourhood. People strike up conversations, exchange ideas and shape their neighbourhood together.
Urban greenery is becoming increasingly important, particularly at a time of rising heat stress in cities. Projects such as the Green Sponsors demonstrate how local initiatives can make a direct contribution to climate adaptation and sustainable urban development.
Anyone wishing to get involved can suggest a suitable site via the Green City project page and register directly. In this way, a small idea can quickly become a thriving meeting place right in the heart of the city.
