"Free Food for All" in Athens

Free Food For All, Greece, Rotary District 1920

The "Free Food for All" project was launched by the Greek people around Konstantinos and aims to secure the daily food supply for people in need in the long term.

The Rotary Clubs of Aisttal-Hagenberg, Freistadt and Schwalmstadt, in cooperation with the Rotary District 1920, have made a contribution to the success of "Free Food for All" in Athens by providing all the kitchen equipment.

The ongoing austerity measures in Greece since the 2010 financial crisis have had a dramatic impact on the population. In 2022, 26.3% of the population will still be at risk of poverty. Rural areas are particularly hard hit, where unemployment has risen to 25% due to infrastructure cuts and per capita income has fallen significantly. These economic challenges mean that more and more people are dependent on public and free social welfare programmes, including large families, single parents and pensioners.
Konstantinos' group has been running a feeding centre for the poor in Athens for over 11 years, distributing around 400 hot meals a day free of charge. The food often comes from supermarkets, producers and private donors. Despite support from the Austrian aid organisation Griechenlandhilfe, the dedicated helpers are dependent on further support in order to continue their work.
This is exactly where the Rotary project came in: By providing kitchen equipment, the long-term functionality of the social kitchen was ensured. The Rotarians themselves lent a hand with the construction in order to achieve the goal.
It should also be emphasised that the helpers paid their travel costs and personal expenses out of their own pockets. Thanks to these joint efforts, the goal - long-term help for self-help for the most socially disadvantaged in Athens - came a great deal closer.

Helping #schongenial committed people to help. Thank you Konstantinos and his team - it's brilliant
