Austria’s primary schools kick off the new school year
The figures also illustrate the scale of the new school year. According to Statistics Austria, around 372,900 children across Austria will be attending primary school in the 2026/27 school year. The highest pupil numbers are expected in Vienna, with around 82,300, Lower Austria, with around 69,300, and Upper Austria, with around 67,500 primary school pupils.
Between anticipation and initial challenges
For the new pupils themselves, their first day at school is dominated by these questions: Who will sit next to me? What will my teacher be like? Will I make new friends quickly?
Starting school brings with it numerous changes. New daily routines and tasks demand increasing independence, whilst at the same time a whole new world opens up for the children, one in which they can further develop their skills, discover their interests and experience new communities. It is only natural that anticipation and curiosity are mixed with a certain amount of nervousness during this special transition.
A small token for a big step
