The year 1888 is considered the birth of the Badner Bahn. In its 136-year history, however, it has never transported as many passengers as it did last year. In 2023, 15.8 million people travelled on the Badner Bahn - a new record that, according to the operating company Wiener Lokalbahnen, is significantly higher than the previous record of 13.4 million passengers in 2019.
Successful public transport
The Badner Bahn is currently the most-used regional railway in Austria. Covering a distance of around 27 kilometres, it connects the centre of Vienna with Baden and is a prime example of successful public transport across the federal provinces.
Targeted investments create incentives
Targeted investments such as additional trains, a higher frequency - including night services - and a modernised vehicle fleet have created incentives for passengers to switch from cars to the environmentally friendly Badner Bahn. Each passenger thus saves around 1.6 tonnes of CO2 per year on the route from Baden to Vienna - and thus contributes to lower CO2 emissions and more climate protection!
