Impressive figures and a vibrant volunteering culture
A glance at the figures reveals the enormous significance of this tradition. According to the Austrian Brass Band Association, there are around 2,200 brass bands in Austria with approximately 140,000 active musicians. If we include supporting members and officials, the number of people directly or indirectly involved is significantly higher. This makes brass band music one of the country’s largest volunteer-run cultural movements. It is particularly noteworthy that many children and young people find their way into music through music societies and thus become part of a strong community at an early age.
Preserving tradition and shaping the future
Brass band music is a central part of preserving traditions. Marches, polkas and waltzes are passed down through the generations, keeping them alive. At the same time, the scene is constantly evolving: modern arrangements and new styles show that tradition and innovation need not be a contradiction. Especially in these fast-paced times, brass band music creates a space for personal connections, solidarity and cultural identity.
OÖ Versicherung in step with brass band music
A look at OÖ Versicherung shows just how deeply this connection between tradition, community and music is rooted in everyday life. Every June, special sounds can be heard in the company’s courtyard when employees who are active in brass bands meet for joint rehearsals. Here, music becomes a unifying language across departments and reflects precisely those values that also characterise brass music throughout the country.
The joint march-in finally opens the courtyard festival and brings this living musical culture to life. Also present is Managing Director Othmar Nagl, himself a passionate musician with a solid background in music. The ensemble is supported by colleagues who, as market vendors, are also involved in clubs.
