Georg Scheiblauer, chief motorbike instructor at ÖAMTC-Fahrtechnik, gives valuable tips on how bikers can start the new season safely.
Winterising the motorbike correctly
- Check the fluids: Before the first ride, the engine oil, brake fluid, hydraulic fluid and coolant should be checked to ensure that the motorbike is running smoothly.
- Lighting and electronics: Are the lighting system, indicators, brake lights and horn working properly? A thorough check is essential to ensure that you are clearly visible on the road.
- Tyre check: Tyres should be checked particularly carefully - both air pressure and tread depth must be correct in order to be safe on the road.
- Chainset check: Are the sprockets worn or is the chain too far from the sprocket? An intact drive set is crucial for a safe ride.
- Keep an eye on the brakes: Regularly checking the brakes and replacing the brake pads in good time can prevent accidents.
Safety on the outward journey
- Appropriate protective clothing: A cautious riding style is important, but the right clothing also plays a decisive role. Complete protective clothing should be a matter of course in order to provide the best possible protection against injury.
- Defensive driving style: Anticipatory and controlled driving as well as maintaining an appropriate distance help to avoid dangerous situations.
- Avoid blind spots: Never drive in the blind spot of vehicles for longer than necessary to minimise the risk of accidents.
- Interpret dangers correctly: Dark patches on bends or remnants of chippings on the roadside can indicate dangers that require an adapted driving style.
- Training and preparation: Riding technique training, especially with regard to braking and swerving, can save lives. Regular practice in handling a motorbike increases road safety.
