Children have a different perception than adults and are not yet able to judge distances or speed correctly. Road traffic is particularly challenging for the little ones, which is why ÖAMTC Upper Austria offers road safety programmes tailored to the respective age groups, such as "The little road 1x1" for five to six-year-olds in cooperation with AUVA, where children practise the correct behaviour on the pavement or crossing the road step by step in a playful and age-appropriate manner.
"Road safety education is one of the core tasks of the ÖAMTC. The mobility club uses various road safety programmes to teach children about the dangers of road traffic. From kindergarten to vocational school and secondary school, there are age-appropriate formats. In this way, we prepare children and young people even better for the dangers of road traffic and thus ensure greater safety in their lives," says ÖAMTC Upper Austria Regional Director Harald Großauer.
New learning traffic lights for training operations
Since February, the ÖAMTC's road safety educators have been supported by a new learning traffic light when teaching the content. Yunex Traffic, a leading global company for intelligent traffic systems, developed the pedestrian traffic light specifically for the ÖAMTC's requirements and provided it free of charge. The mobile signalling system is programmed with an automatic red-green changeover and can also be activated manually via a hand-held radio transmitter, while special energy-saving technology enables mobile battery operation over several training days. This is a fun way for children to learn how to behave correctly at pedestrian crossings controlled by traffic lights. The learning traffic light is being used for the first time at the Edeltraud-Hofer-Straße kindergarten in the Green Centre in Linz.
