When people talk about a bakery, most think of fresh pastries, crispy rolls and the smell of bread. Yet in one of the largest slums in Nairobi, Kenya, there is far more to a loaf of bread than just food. Here, bread becomes a symbol of education, the future and new prospects.

With the support of the Austrian bakery ingredients manufacturer backaldrin, the Angel Bakery was established in Korogocho. The project has a goal that goes far beyond economic success: to provide training for local people, create jobs and, at the same time, supply children with fresh bread.

“Bread is far more than just a foodstuff. It can open up opportunities for people and give them hope,” sums up backaldrin owner Peter Augendopler.

Education through craftsmanship

The bakery was established not only as a production facility but also as a training centre. There, young people are given the opportunity to learn the art of baking and build up career prospects. In a region where jobs are often in short supply, this opens up new opportunities for a self-determined life.

At the same time, local knowledge is strengthened. The apprentices learn modern baking techniques and can later pass on their skills themselves. This creates a sustainable cycle of knowledge, work and development.

Bread for thousands of children

The social impact of the project is particularly impressive. Every day, numerous schools in the surrounding area are supplied with bread. As a result, thousands of children regularly receive a nutritious meal, which in turn is an important prerequisite for being able to concentrate on their studies and develop healthily.

Particularly in regions where poverty is a daily reality, a secure supply of food can make a decisive difference. The bread from Angel Bakery thus becomes a vital building block for education and future opportunities.

Help that has a long-term impact

Many aid projects focus on short-term support. The Angel Bakery takes a different approach: it creates structures that are sustainable in the long term. Through training, employment and local value creation, it offers prospects that extend far beyond the daily production of bread.

#absolutelybrilliant when a project like this impressively demonstrates how entrepreneurial expertise and social commitment can work together to bring about sustainable change.
