30 years of Lake Neusiedl National Park

Lake Neusiedl National Park

This summer, the cross-border Lake Neusiedl - Seewinkel National Park is celebrating its 30th anniversary.

Lake Neusiedl is one of the few steppe lakes in Europe, the largest drainless lake in Central Europe and an impressive natural jewel. The endless expanse of the unique Pannonian landscape, glistening water, rolling hills and idyllic villages and vineyards create a backdrop of special beauty. The region is also characterised by its warm hospitality, which ensures unforgettable moments and delights nature lovers, pleasure-seekers, sports enthusiasts and families alike.

A cross-border protected area

The Neusiedler See - Seewinkel National Park was founded in 1993 and officially opened in April 1994. With a protected area of around 300 square kilometres, the cross-border national park extends across Austrian and Hungarian territory. Just under a third of this is in Austria. Since 1996, the park has been home to the National Park Centre in Illmitz, which is visited by up to 50,000 people every year.

National park cycle path in planning

A new national park cycle path is currently being planned and is being worked on with Hungarian partners, explains National Park Director Johannes Ehrenfeldner. In the Hungarian part, this will be newly signposted and adapted, while on the Austrian side, the existing cycle path will be made more attractive and equipped with new information boards.
