A new beginning needs more than four walls

Moving into your own home marks an important turning point - especially for people who previously lived on the street. But the step into independence also brings with it numerous hurdles: a lack of furniture and therefore often no kitchen. This is precisely where the new support programme from the non-profit Salzburger Wohnbaugesellschaft (gswb) comes in.

On the initiative of Managing Director Ferdinand Hochleitner, two fully equipped rental kitchens were donated to the Salzburg-based organisation VinziDach - Housing First. They are intended to make it easier to start a self-determined life by providing immediately usable kitchen units for flats that do not yet have a kitchen.

Housing First: Housing first

VinziDach has been successfully implementing the internationally recognised Housing First principle in Salzburg since 2012. People who have been homeless for a long time are first given their own flat - and not, as in conventional models, a place in emergency accommodation. They then receive intensive social work support directly in their new home. The goal: long-term stability and an independent life.

The flats are provided by the municipal housing service and arranged by non-profit property developers such as gswb. However, many of these subsidised flats lack basic furnishings - especially kitchens. Without these, simple everyday tasks such as cooking or refrigerating food are not possible. This makes moving in unnecessarily difficult and increases the burden on the people concerned.

Rental kitchens as practical help in everyday life

The mobile kitchens donated by gswb provide a pragmatic solution. They are not permanently installed and can be passed on flexibly from flat to flat. As soon as a fixed kitchen is installed, the VinziDach team dismantles the rental kitchen and passes it on to the next person in need.

"It is a matter close to our hearts to support people who may not have had as much luck in life as we have.

I see it as a matter of course to help quickly and unbureaucratically in difficult life situations. With the rental kitchens, we want to make a small contribution to making the start in a new home a little easier," says Ferdinand Hochleitner, Managing Director of gswb.

The demand for rental kitchens at VinziDach remains high. With the support of gswb, the majority of the people supported can now be provided with a functional kitchen area immediately - a small measure with a big impact.

#It's already genial how simple, pragmatic and unbureaucratic help can have a direct impact on everyday life - without great effort, but with an enormous effect.

It's nice to see so many positive things:
