Community spirit and willingness to help on World Red Cross Day

A society is not only defined by its achievements and prosperity, but above all by the cohesion and care that its members feel for one another.

These essential values took centre stage at the reception for World Red Cross Day, which was recently held at the Palais Kaufmännischer Verein in Linz. Around 300 guests gathered to find out how a community-orientated life can continue to function in the future.

Strong through community

A moving example of this solidarity is the life of Wilfried Lettner, who has lived with a severe blood clotting disorder, haemophilia, since birth. This disease, a genetic defect, impairs blood clotting and can lead to spontaneous bleeding with serious consequences. However, thanks to regular support from the specialists at the Blood Centre Linz, Lettner is able to lead a relatively normal life. Through continuous care and the provision of life-saving medication, the Blutzentrale team enables him to cope with his everyday life and manage his illness.

"My illness is a constant companion in my life,"

explains Lettner, who is a successful web designer and entrepreneur despite the challenges posed by his illness. His case clearly shows the importance of the work and support of organisations such as the Red Cross, which are committed to the well-being and health of their fellow human beings.

Strong together

World Red Cross Day is an opportunity to honour the often unknown but tireless heroes of everyday life. In addition to medical services such as those provided by the blood centre in Linz, the volunteers who are involved in migration, youth work, hospice work, education and equal opportunities are also highlighted. These silent heroes make a significant contribution to strengthening the community and promoting cohesion.

The Red Cross in Upper Austria plays a crucial role in ensuring humanity and help in the region. With a wide range of services, including the promotion of life skills for young people, combating loneliness and poverty, the blood donation service, the rescue service and the teaching of first aid skills, the Red Cross is an indispensable anchor in society.

"We are there"

emphasises Dr Aichinger Walter, President of the Red Cross in Upper Austria.

"Our more than 25,000 employees, most of them volunteers, take on responsibility and make the Red Cross a symbol of humanity. They strengthen the community and make necessary services possible that might otherwise not be available."
