Vienna General Hospital (AKH) is facing a significant change in its lighting infrastructure. With more than 50,000 lamps from the 1970s, some of which are burning around the clock, it is time to switch to more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient alternatives. A major replacement campaign has been launched to realise this step towards energy saving and sustainability.

A step towards energy efficiency and sustainability

In the first phase of this project, over 8,000 corridor lights will be replaced with modern and more economical lamps. The City of Vienna predicts that this measure alone will reduce electricity consumption by one gigawatt hour in the first year and save a total of 265 tonnesof CO2.

The plan is to extend the project to all 52,000 lights in the entire AKH in the future. This would result in annual savings of up to 700 tonnes ofCO2 and up to 2.7 gigawatt hours of electricity - an amount equivalent to the electricity consumption of 1,350 average households.

Focus on energy efficiency

"From a lighting point of view, a hospital is an entire city in miniature with similarly diverse lighting tasks," explains Herwig Wetzlinger, Director of the AKH. The challenge is to adapt the new luminaires to the special needs and structures of the hospital. The existing luminaires are customised and integrated into the ventilation systems in the corridors of Vienna General Hospital. In order to ensure that the new luminaires are not only energy-efficient, but also preserve the familiar ambience of the hospital, customised luminaires were developed. These should not only preserve the aesthetic appearance of the premises, but also improve the quality of the lighting and ensure uniform illumination of the rooms.
