Together with partner clubs, the Rotary Club Gastein has been supporting projects run by the Diamani Kouta - New Generation organisation in the Kafountine region of southern Senegal for several years. The aim of the initiative is sustainable regional development based on the principle of "helping people to help themselves".

Diamani Kouta is working on several key areas to improve people's living conditions in the long term. These include in particular

  • Promoting agricultural self-sufficiency, including through new cultivation methods and the successful use of seed potatoes from Upper Austria, which are now also producing good yields in Senegal
  • Establishing additional income opportunities, for example through beekeeping or small farms
  • Support for local fisheries, including through better equipment for more efficient work
  • Training programmes for women, for example to become seamstresses, combined with the purchase of sewing machines and the establishment of small tailor shops
  • Teaching children about agriculture and nutrition from kindergarten age so that they understand the importance of self-sufficiency and the responsible use of resources at an early age

Within this comprehensive development programme, the Rotary Club of Gastein has financially supported and implemented several specific projects:

  • Construction of a kindergarten that provides children with early childhood care and education
  • Rebuilding a school that is now attended by many children in the region
  • Construction of a water drilling tower to ensure the supply of clean drinking water
  • Purchase of an off-road vehicle that is used in the village both for transport to the market and for medical emergencies
  • Current: Expansion of agricultural land by around one hectare to further strengthen local food production

These projects make an important contribution to the development of the region. They combine education, infrastructure and economic prospects and help to give local people better living conditions and opportunities for the future in the long term.
