The Prix Ars Electronica was first awarded in 1987 and has since developed into the most traditional and prestigious media art prize in the world. To date, the competition in Linz has recorded 87,743 submissions.
Its significance is based on the artistic quality and innovation of the projects submitted and honoured by a high-calibre jury. However, the appeal that the Prix Ars Electronica has developed over the years is not only reflected in the number of entries. Rather, the competition has become a platform for institutions and initiatives that want to promote meaningful border crossings between different areas of our society.
Honouring creativity and pioneering spirit
The prize is awarded every year and offers artists who work at the interface of art, technology and society and thus offer inspiring and forward-looking insights an important platform to present their work to an international jury of experts. The coveted Golden Nicas are awarded during the Ars Electronica Festival in Linz and are among the most important awards for creativity and pioneering spirit in the digital media sector.
