The World Day of Social Justice on 20 February is a reminder that equal opportunities, participation and solidarity cannot be taken for granted. Social justice means that all people - regardless of origin, income or living situation - are given fair opportunities to shape their lives in a self-determined way. It begins where social barriers are recognised and actively dismantled.

Especially in times of rising living costs, growing social inequality and global crises, this idea is becoming increasingly important. It is not just about financial support, but also about dignity, prospects and the certainty of not being left alone.

Social justice is created where people receive concrete help. "It's about enabling fair opportunities and helping where financial or social hurdles make everyday life more difficult," emphasises Upper Austrian Red Cross President Dipl. Red Cross President Dipl.-Päd. Gottfried Hirz emphasises on the occasion of today's World Day of Social Justice. The OÖ. Red Cross works every day to relieve people at risk of poverty, strengthen young generations and actively promote social cohesion.

The 22 Red Cross markets in Upper Austria are a key part of this endeavour. These markets provide people on low incomes with food and everyday goods at greatly reduced prices. These markets mean much more than financial relief: they create space for encounters, exchange and social participation. "Social justice begins where help becomes tangible and people are given prospects again," says Hirz.

Volunteering as a foundation

Another focus is on supporting children and young people. Educational programmes, support services and the diverse work of the Red Cross Youth help to compensate for disadvantages at an early stage and strengthen future opportunities.

Whether in social services, in the visiting service or in youth work: voluntary commitment is the foundation of this work. People who donate their time and energy make an invaluable contribution to social cohesion. "Social justice thrives on togetherness. People who get involved make our society more humane and solidary," emphasises Hirz.

#schongenial, the World Day of Social Justice, makes it clear that a fair society does not just happen by itself. It grows through joint action and practised solidarity.
