Since July 2025, the EU has been providing tangible guidance on this. The new ecodesign energy label shows how energy-efficient, durable and repair-friendly an appliance actually is.
The label is similar in function to the familiar energy labels on household appliances. It provides consumers with clear information on criteria such as battery life, repairability, availability of spare parts or the length of time for which manufacturers provide software updates. This creates transparency, which not only makes it easier for consumers to make comparisons, but also contributes to a more conscious purchasing decision.
Longer use instead of quick replacement
A key aim of the new label is to significantly extend the service life of smartphones and tablets. Manufacturers are obliged to provide spare parts and repair instructions for up to seven years. This makes repairs easier and prevents devices from being disposed of prematurely due to minor defects. At the same time, software and operating system updates must be available for at least five years. This ensures that the devices remain safe and technically up-to-date - even if they have been in use for several years.
For consumers, this means that if you buy a smartphone with a good label, you can use it reliably for longer. This is not only easy on the wallet, but also reduces the pressure to regularly switch to a new model.
Benefits for the environment and society
However, the effects go far beyond the individual purchase decision. Longer usage cycles result in less electronic waste. Resources such as rare earths or valuable metals need to be mined less frequently. Energy consumption in production is also reduced if appliances are not constantly replaced. The new label therefore provides incentives that combine individual benefits with a contribution to environmental protection.
Eveline Pupeter, owner and Managing Director of the Austrian smartphone manufacturer emporia, emphasises: "As a European smartphone company, we are committed to acting in an ecologically responsible manner. Even in the past, emporia mobile phones were known for lasting longer than models from other manufacturers. Our customers are not mobile phone hoppers who change their phones every year or every two years. Our customers appreciate long-lasting quality."
We think this eco-label, which makes sustainability a reality, is #schongenial.
