A place of joy and community - the Rotaract KidsCamp

Rotaract KidsCamp, We give holidays, Volunteer State Prize

The Rotaract KidsCamp has been inspiring children and helpers alike since 2008. What once began on Heilbronn's Gaffenberg as a unique social project of the Rotaract Club Heilbronn has developed into a transnational success.

The KidsCamp has also been taking place in Austria since 2014 and gives children from socio-economically disadvantaged families unforgettable days out.

Joachim Rehm, RC Vöcklabruck-Attersee, remembers the beginnings: "I had the idea of implementing the KidsCamp in Austria in 2013, after I was able to take part in two camps in Germany and thought it was a social project that was a perfect fit for the Rotarian family."

"We give holidays" - the KidsCamp spirit

Under the motto "We give the gift of a holiday", the KidsCamp enables children from difficult social backgrounds to spend four days at a camp that offers much more than just fun and games. The aim is to teach the participating children and young people friendship, self-esteem and important social skills such as teamwork and consideration. Together with Rotaract and Rotary members, the children experience a community characterised by joy and solidarity.

Every year, between 50 and 70 children take part in the Austrian KidsCamp, which is supervised by dedicated Rotaractors and young Rotarians. The highlights of each day - from the campfire on the first evening to the emotional farewell circle at the end - remain in the memories of both children and helpers for a long time.

Sustainability and long-term impact

The KidsCamp not only promotes the personal development of the participating children, but also inspires former participants to get involved themselves later on. Some of the children from the early years are now active as helpers and even in the organisation team. With a programme specially tailored to them, they learn to take on responsibility and volunteer - an approach that impressively underlines the lasting impact of the project.

An anniversary and a special honour

In summer 2024, Rotaract KidsCamp Austria celebrated its 10th anniversary. With 71 children taking part, it was the largest KidsCamp of the season. The milestone was duly celebrated at a colourful evening with an anniversary cake.

Another special award followed in December 2024: the KidsCamp was honoured with second place in the Volunteer State Prize in the "Young Commitment" category. This award recognises initiatives that inspire young people to volunteer and highlights the importance of the KidsCamp as a pioneering project.

Laura & Lisa Wendzel from RAC Graz & RC Graz-Joanneum, D1910 emphasise: "Awarding the Rotaract KidsCamp Austria with the National Volunteer Award is a wonderful recognition for all the volunteers who make the KidsCamp an unforgettable experience for the children every year. At the same time, it is a special recognition of the intensive volunteer work and commitment behind this great project."

Outlook for 2025

The next KidsCamp will take place from 14 to 17 August 2025 at the Austrian Scout Camp St. Georgen im Attergau. It once again promises unforgettable moments and strengthens the Rotarian community, which is committed to the well-being of children with heart and dedication.
