HOPE - An appeal to the future

AEC Festival 2024, HOPE

The Ars Electronica Festival 2024, entitled "HOPE - Who will turn the tide?", invites you to Linz, Austria, from 4 to 8 September for a comprehensive reflection on the future.

It addresses the most pressing issues of our time: climate change, social inequalities, the ethical challenges of artificial intelligence and the responsibility of digital society. The festival sees itself as an interface between art, technology and society and offers a platform for the exchange of ideas that can change the world.

This year's motto "HOPE - Who will turn the tide?" is not just a question, but also an urgent call to action. It reflects the current global situation in which humanity is faced with enormous challenges. The title of the festival emphasises hope as a decisive factor in overcoming these challenges. Hope is not just a passive expectation, but an active principle that motivates action and makes change possible.

Gerfried Stocker, Artistic Director of Ars Electronica, aptly summarises the festival's core message: "Hope is not a naïve illusion, but a necessary instrument for finding the courage to change. Ars Electronica is a place where we can face these challenges, develop new perspectives and work together towards a better future."

Art as a catalyst for change

Art plays a central role at Ars Electronica as a catalyst for social change. The festival's various exhibitions and installations focus on the relationship between people and technology and show how art can have a profound influence on technological developments. Artists from all over the world present works that explore how we deal with the challenges of our time and reveal new perspectives.

Particularly noteworthy are the projects that pursue interdisciplinary approaches. These combine art with science, technology and social commitment. For example, one exhibition shows how artificial intelligence can be used to tackle climate change, while another installation scrutinises the impact of digital change on our society. These works challenge visitors to consider the ethical and moral issues raised by technological innovation.

A global network for change

The Ars Electronica Festival is much more than just an event. It is part of a global network that brings together artists, scientists, technologists and activists from all over the world to work together on the major challenges of the future. Through collaborations with universities, research organisations, technology companies and cultural institutions, the festival creates a platform for the exchange of ideas and the development of new projects that extend beyond the festival.

This year, a special focus is on the topics of climate change and sustainability. Various lectures, workshops and discussion panels will be dedicated to the question of how technological innovations can be used to minimise the negative effects of climate change. The role of art as a catalyst for social change will also be highlighted. Participants are invited to contribute their own ideas and perspectives and work together on solutions.

Ethical issues in the digital age

Another central theme of the festival is the ethical questions raised by advancing digitalisation and the use of artificial intelligence. How are these technologies changing our society? What new power structures are they creating? And how can we ensure that they are used for the common good?

These and other questions will be discussed in various formats, including conferences, panel discussions and workshops. International experts from the fields of technology, ethics, politics and art will offer valuable insights and suggestions.

#The festival has developed into the world's largest event for art, technology and society. A firework of creative ideas from more than one hundred nations are presented in Linz. Already ingenious.

It's nice to see so many positive things:
