New training positions for medical specialists in Tyrol

Specialist training positions

In order to keep prospective medical specialists in Tyrol, 23 additional training positions are being created.

In order to maintain the outstanding quality of our healthcare system at a high level and to ensure healthcare provision in the future, the province of Tyrol intends to provide 23 additional specialist training places. These include the following additional training places:

  • Paediatrics and adolescent medicine: 8
  • Psychiatry: 8
  • Ophthalmology and optometry: 4
  • Urology: 2
  • Ear, nose and throat medicine: 1

This measure follows an analysis of doctors' requirements by the province, Tyrolean hospitals, the Tyrolean Medical Association and the Austrian Health Insurance Fund (ÖGK), and the training positions are to be created in stages up to 2025.

Broadly diversified objectives

The objectives of the programme are wide-ranging. On the one hand, the aim is to provide trainee doctors with a job offer after their training and to keep them in the state. Currently, university graduates often have to wait a long time for a specialist training position. Many therefore move to another province for their training and then stay there. Sufficient positions in Tyrol are therefore crucial.

On the other hand, it is important to inspire young doctors to work in private practice. Here they could learn a lot about organisation and entrepreneurship in addition to their specialist training, making it easier for them to take the step into self-employment.

We think measures that promote the training of our doctors and thus improve specialist medical care are brilliant!
