This was impressively demonstrated by the Red Cross Youth campaign in the Ried district on Austrian Read Aloud Day on 21 March. The young people visited the senior citizens in the Tumeltsham day centre to spend an afternoon reading aloud together.
Reading together connects generations
The encounter between the young members of the Red Cross Youth and the senior citizens was not only enjoyable, but also enriching. Reading aloud together, colouring mandalas and simply spending time together, both generations flourished. The children and young people had books and stories in their luggage and shared them with the senior citizens.
The importance of reading and reading aloud extends across all age groups. Studies show that it not only promotes creativity and imagination, but also trains the memory and keeps the mind young. Not only does it make you happier and healthier, it can also delay dementia. Children who are regularly read to often develop better reading skills.
"Reading and learning together should be meaningful and enjoyable - we are very keen to convey this,"
emphasises Dr Aichinger Walter, President of the Upper Austrian Red Cross. Red Cross.
