Volunteering has a long tradition in Austria and is an indispensable part of social life. According to Statistics Austria, around 3.73 million people are involved in voluntary work. This corresponds to 48.2 per cent of the population aged 15 and over. On average, almost six hours a week are spent on voluntary work. This adds up to a total of around 22 million hours per week spent on unpaid work for the common good (source: Statistics Austria, volunteer work survey; published on ORF.at and elsewhere). These figures impressively illustrate the enormous social and economic importance of voluntary work in Austria.

This commitment is particularly strong in Upper Austria. In cities and rural regions alike, volunteers play a key role in shaping public life. Whether at the Austrian Red Cross, the volunteer fire brigade, in music clubs, sports clubs or social initiatives: volunteers ensure safety, community and cultural diversity. They organise events, look after young people, help in emergencies and strengthen social cohesion. This commitment creates a strong sense of unity that creates identity and keeps regions alive.

Reliable partner for volunteering

Social life in Upper Austria is significantly supported by these committed people. Their work forms the backbone of the community and is the central basis for a strong sense of togetherness.

Raiffeisen Upper Austria has been supporting this commitment for many years and sees itself as a reliable partner to numerous organisations. As a regional co-operative bank, it is convinced that voluntary work contributes significantly to the quality of life. Support is provided on the basis of this self-image - from blue light organisations to music and sports clubs to numerous other initiatives that enrich social life. This actively contributes to the sense of unity that forms the foundation of regional communities.

Promoting and exemplifying commitment

To provide additional support for voluntary work, Raiffeisenlandesbank Oberösterreich launched the #wirmachtssozial initiative at the beginning of 2024. Since then, employees have been entitled to one paid working day per year that they can dedicate to social causes. Deployments or training with blue light organisations are also taken into account. In this way, voluntary commitment is not only encouraged, but actively exemplified. All in the spirit of a strong, united WE.
