This is exactly what the CARLA shop of Caritas in Linz is drawing attention to with its campaign week from 10 to 14 March.
Environmentally friendly and resource-saving
The production of new jeans is extremely resource-intensive. Among other things, large quantities of water are used in the production process. By buying second-hand jeans, the demand for new production is reduced, which in turn saves valuable resources.
"Second-hand jeans have many advantages: they are already registered, comfortable to wear and keep their shape - without any nasty surprises after the first wash,"
explains Helga Perusch, head of the CARLA shop. In addition, the chemicals used in production have already been washed out, which reduces the environmental and health impact.
Social added value and affordable fashion
In addition to the ecological benefits, second-hand jeans also offer important added social value. In the CARLA shops, people on low incomes can find high-quality clothing thanks to free vouchers that they receive at Caritas social counselling centres. This enables them to dress according to their own preferences instead of having to rely on clothing donations.
The wide range of second-hand jeans also offers fashion-conscious people the opportunity to shop more sustainably and get hold of brand-name jeans at a fraction of the price of new ones. If you own jeans in good condition, you can donate them directly to CARLA. This creates space in your wardrobe and gives others the chance to benefit from sustainable fashion.
The CARLA campaign week impressively demonstrates how easy it can be to make a positive contribution with small changes - for the environment, for social justice and for your own wallet.
