My path to the "Rolling Angels"
I originally trained as a paramedic and practised this profession for eight years. Direct contact with people was always important to me. When I then switched to IT within my company, I quickly realised that I was missing precisely this aspect. A nurse friend of mine told me about the "Rolling Angels", and I knew immediately: that's it! Here I can combine my medical knowledge with my passion for interpersonal encounters.
Unforgettable moments
My first assignment left a lasting impression on me. We took a man to his wife's birthday party. He was severely weakened by a stroke, could no longer speak and hardly seemed to react to his surroundings. We helped him to dress up and accompanied him into the hall where his family was waiting. At first he seemed absent, but when his wife began to speak at the other end of the room, something marvellous happened. His eyes suddenly woke up, he turned his head in her direction, looked for her hand and kissed it. At that moment, I knew we had given him a priceless moment. Everyone's eyes were full of tears - mine included.
Experiences like that confirm to me again and again how valuable our work is. We don't just take people to special places, we create moments that last.
The support from my employer
What makes me particularly happy is the great support I receive from my employer, Oberösterreichische Versicherung. Every year, our works council collects donations for a charitable organisation at our Christmas party - this time the choice fell on the "Rolling Angels". The response from the employees was overwhelming. Thanks to their generosity, we can continue to fulfil numerous heartfelt wishes. I particularly appreciate the fact that my employer not only supports this commitment, but actively encourages it.
Why I would do it again and again
Working for the "Rolling Angels" means more to me than just volunteering. It shows me how important it is to take time, to listen, to show that you care. Sometimes it's the little things - a touch, a smile, a hand held - that have the biggest impact.
I am grateful to be part of this wonderful organisation. Every outreach reminds me how precious life is and how important it is to share happiness with others.
