Environmental and climate protection are not just buzzwords in Leonding, but a living reality. The fourth-largest city in Upper Austria is one of the pioneering cities on the road to climate neutrality, is a member of the Climate Alliance and is involved in numerous sustainability projects as an e-GE municipality. However, it is not only the city itself, but also its citizens who are making a valuable contribution to a greener future with innovative ideas.

Diversity of climate protection - from gardens to high-tech facilities

Every year, the city honours particularly exemplary projects in the fields of energy, biodiversity, education and the circular economy with the "Leondine" environmental and climate protection award.

The Bürgerenergiegemeinschaft BEG Kürnbergwald eG has dedicated itself entirely to community energy supply. Around 90 members generate and utilise locally produced solar power. This model shows how the energy transition works in the hands of citizens. The shared use of photovoltaic electricity saves fossil fuels and strengthens regional value creation.

The Eßbichl family, who have transformed their garden into a natural oasis, are sending out a strong signal in favour of biodiversity. Rainwater utilisation, solar power, native plants and the avoidance of chemicals make the property a living example of sustainable living and ecological awareness in everyday life.

The Leonding-based company Ebner Industrieofenbau contributes technological innovation. With the development of the GREENBAFx bell-type furnace systems, a breakthrough has been made towards emission-free industrial production. The energy-efficient systems significantly reduce energy consumption and show that climate protection can also be a clear competitive advantage in industry.

The Special School Hart in turn combines environmental education with practical experience. Together with its pupils, the team of teachers is creating a school garden in which vegetables and herbs are grown, processed and tasted. In this way, children learn in a playful way how sustainable nutrition and resource conservation work.

The Wiesinger family from Bergham has made a particularly inspiring contribution: an old farm has been transformed into a diverse self-sufficient garden with a meadow orchard, sheep and compost management. This heartfelt project is an example of regional cycles, conscious consumption and climate protection in action.

Working together for a sustainable future

"It's about the small steps that each of us can take," emphasises the city of Leonding. The award-winning projects impressively show how committed Leonding is to shaping the path to a climate-friendly future - with heart, innovation and a sense of community.
