The archive of the Salzburg Festival is located in the former Kommandantenvilla in the Riedenburg district of Salzburg. Since February of this year, the archive has been open to the public every Tuesday and Thursday from 10.00 am to 4.00 pm. It is not necessary to book in advance. The open days at the start of the archive opening from 7 to 10 February were already very successful with hundreds of visitors.
A place of cultural and historical remembrance
The opening of the archive was initiated in 2020 as part of the preparations for the exhibition celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Salzburg Festival. "We thought about how we could make the archive more public and accessible. We want a living archive that doesn't languish in a kind of slumber," explains Artistic Director Markus Hinterhäuser. "They are places of remembrance, our cultural memory and also a testimony to European cultural history."
Objects from the history of the festival
Around 1,000 boxes filled with objects from the Festival's history have been brought to the new archive in recent months to be exhibited there, such as the oldest surviving Jedermann costume, files, documents and props. "We have many wonderful treasures that we don't want to withhold from anyone," says archive manager Margarete Lasinger.
