New life for historic blueprinting!

Blueprint, craft awards 2024, Marie-Dominique Wagner

Marie-Dominique Wagner, a dedicated designer and master dressmaker from Leonding, has impressively demonstrated how traditional craftsmanship can be integrated into the world of modern fashion with her project "Indigo - new life for historic blue printing". She was awarded 2nd prize in the "Sustainability and Ecologisation" category of the Upper Austrian Crafts Awards for her creative achievement.

Inspiration from the traditional Wagner hand printing workshop

Marie Wagner's work is deeply rooted in her homeland and the local craft tradition. The idea for the "Indigo" collection came to her when she discovered a historic printing stamp from the 1850s in the traditional Wagner hand printing workshop in Bad Leonfelden. This stamp, which bears the characteristic pattern of Mühlviertel blue printing, inspired her and became the basis for her collection, which takes up and reinterprets this old technique in a sustainable and contemporary way.

"Indigo": Timeless fashion made from Mühlviertel blue print and fine linen

In her "Indigo" collection, the designer combines the traditional craft of blueprinting with modern design ideas. The collection includes elegant and minimalist garments such as a wrap skirt, a dress and an oversized tunic, which are enhanced by the 150-year-old pattern. Made from robust Mühlviertel linen, the pieces emphasise the quality and sustainability of regional materials. The historical print stamp lends each item of clothing a special authenticity and creates a link between past and present. For Wagner, each piece is unique and an example of how fashion can become a conscious expression of values and regional identity.

Leonding as a creative centre of craftsmanship

Marie Wagner's home town of Leonding - incidentally, the municipality of Leonding is also a #schongenial partner - is a key source of inspiration for her work. Her project is characterised in particular by the regional craftsmanship culture and high quality standards. Marie Wagner impressively demonstrates how old techniques can unfold in contemporary contexts. Her approach of preserving historical craft methods through innovative design emphasises her connection to regional identity and her commitment to conscious, sustainable consumption.

The Upper Austrian Craftsmanship Awards: A forum for innovation and tradition

Every year, the Upper Austrian Craftsmanship Awards honour outstanding projects that strengthen regional craftsmanship through creativity, quality and innovation and make it fit for the future. The four categories

  • Innovation & Digitalisation
  • Cooperation & Teamwork
  • Sustainability & Ecologisation
  • Tradition & Modernity

are aimed at craft businesses that harmoniously combine sustainability and tradition and build a bridge between the past and the future. The award winners help to preserve valuable knowledge and traditional techniques while at the same time providing new impetus.

We are delighted that the #schongenial award recognises craft businesses that carry the arc of traditional techniques into the future with great commitment, flair and a spirit of innovation. We warmly congratulate all the award winners. Already ingenious
