Record number of green tech start-ups reached in Austria

Appreciation, already ingenious

Austria has reached a significant milestone in the green technology sector. The brand new map "Green Tech Startups Austria 2024" presents a record number of 193 young technology companies in the field of energy, mobility and resource transition. This increase marks a new high in the development of green companies in the country. The regions of Styria, Carinthia and Vienna are the main centres of this up-and-coming industry, with around a third of all green tech start-ups based there. It is particularly noteworthy that start-ups in the green sector exceeded the number of start-ups in the federal capital for the first time in 2023.

Austria's green tech startup scene is booming

Green Tech Valley has once again demonstrated its strength by presenting the "Green Tech Startups 2024" together with ten partners such as the AplusB centres, Austrian Startups, aws, Climate Lab, ECN, EY, Glacier, Impact Hub Vienna, invest.austria and the Climate and Energy Fund. In collaboration, a total of 193 young companies in the field of environmental technology were identified - an impressive increase of 15 per cent compared to the previous year. Bernhard Puttinger, Managing Director of Green Tech Valley, emphasised the importance of Styria, Carinthia and Vienna as leading locations for green startups, as they are home to more than two thirds of all companies in this field.

How Austria is becoming a pioneer in green technology

It is assumed that the strong innovation ecosystem of research, education and companies provides a significant boost to start-ups. In particular, cities with technical universities such as Vienna, Graz and Leoben account for around 70 per cent of all start-ups. A clear majority of these companies are focussed on the areas of energy and digital solutions. Puttinger emphasised that Green Tech Valley has become fertile ground for green entrepreneurs in recent years thanks to dedicated collaboration. He also mentioned the recent launch of the Green Startupmark, which represents a new ecosystem for startups in the industrial core zone of Upper Styria.

The needs survey among green startups revealed that networking with industry partners was the top priority at 77 per cent, followed by financing issues. A selection of the start-ups shows the diversity and innovative strength of these young companies that are committed to a sustainable future. Start-ups such as Revitalyze from Tyrol, EnerCube from Salzburg and money:care from Vienna offer innovative solutions for a green transformation.

The founders' statements emphasise the importance of a strong network for the success of their companies. David Kirchengast from NetCero in Styria emphasised the partnership with the University of Graz and the importance of Green Tech Valley for their start-up. Katharina Herzog from money:care in Vienna highlighted the expansion of her platform for sustainable investing and emphasised the importance of the network provided. Nicolas Mühlberger from Stromstrudler in Burgenland praised the Green Tech Startups Austria platform for its support in increasing the visibility of his company.
