Meeting at eye level
In autumn, 40 apprentices from Raiffeisenlandesbank Oberösterreich took part in an awareness training course at the Hartheim Institute in order to reduce fear of contact, raise awareness of the topic of inclusion and promote respectful interaction. The participants were given a personal insight into the world of the institute and familiarised themselves with the residential communities on site.
Direct contact with the residents played a central role in this. Through discussions and joint activities, the trainees were able to gain experience that went far beyond theoretical knowledge. Many of them reported that their initial uncertainty quickly subsided and was replaced by openness and interest.
Creative exchange and new perspectives
A special item on the programme was the joint creation of a work of art. This not only produced a creative result, but also led to an intensive dialogue between the apprentices and the residents. The joint work provided space for encounters, discussions and new perspectives on the topic of inclusion.
"It's important to support people with disabilities and give them the opportunity to showcase their skills and talents. My reservations were quickly overcome when I experienced the openness and friendliness of the residents," says Fabian Rafetzeder, apprentice at Raiffeisenlandesbank Oberösterreich. And his colleague Verena Simader added: "This day showed me how important it is to support people with disabilities and provide them with a positive environment. I was very impressed by the friendly atmosphere and the commitment of the employees. I am grateful for this experience."
The awareness training impressively demonstrated how important personal encounters are for a better understanding and respectful interaction with one another. For the apprentices, the day was not only a valuable learning experience, but also an important step towards living inclusion more consciously in everyday life. We think activities like this are #schongenial.
