When workwear is powered by the sun

Blåkläder, sustainability in the textile industry, LEED certification

Sustainability is by no means a matter of course in the textile industry - for the Swedish company Blåkläder, however, it is a central corporate principle. The manufacturer of high-quality workwear pursues a consistent ecological strategy, which is particularly evident in the company's own production facilities in Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

The factory in Myanmar was awarded LEED Platinum certification - the highest recognition for sustainable construction. The production facility in Sri Lanka already received LEED Gold certification in 2017. These certificates underline Blåkläder's commitment to acting responsibly and environmentally conscious in all areas of the supply chain.

LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) is integrated into the entire construction process and evaluates buildings on the basis of seven categories:

  1. Sustainable Sites (SS)
  2. Water efficiency (WE)
  3. Energy and Atmosphere (EA)
  4. Materials and Resources (MR)
  5. Indoor air quality (IEQ)
  6. Innovative design (ID)
  7. Regional focus (RP)

The first five categories relate to specific environmental protection requirements. "Innovative Design" recognises creative, durable solutions in the construction process, while "Regional Focus" takes geographical features into account.

Energy efficiency meets high-tech

State-of-the-art technology is used in the factories to save energy and reduce emissions. Solar energy covers a large part of the energy requirements, reducing electricity costs by at least 50 % - without the need for fossil fuels. Daylight-controlled LED lighting ensures efficient light management. At the same time, prismatic skylights improve natural lighting without letting in heat or UV radiation.

Water-cooled air conditioning systems, which do not use environmentally harmful refrigerants, regulate the indoor climate - efficiently and in a way that conserves resources. Blåkläder also pays attention to sustainability when building its systems: recycled materials, water-saving systems and intelligent waste management are standard.

Responsibility beyond production

Blåkläder thinks sustainability not only ecologically, but also socially. The working conditions in the factories are above average: a pleasant indoor climate, good air quality and healthy lighting ensure a positive working environment. In addition, employees receive targeted training - in the responsible use of energy and resources, but also in terms of conscious mobility.

A clear signal for the future

Blåkläder shows that responsible business practices and high-quality production are not a contradiction in terms. On the contrary: the company is a pioneer for an industry in transition and an example of how even large production chains can be organised in a climate-friendly and fair way - driven by the sun and a clear vision.

It's nice to see so many positive things:
