The Europe-wide tender for the new vehicles was awarded to Carrosserie Hess AG from Switzerland, a renowned manufacturer of modern, fully electric city buses.
Thanks to the joint tender, both cities benefit from more favourable unit prices and shared development costs. The collaboration also enables synergies in maintenance, spare parts and training - an intelligent step towards using public funds efficiently and structurally anchoring the transport transition.
Another milestone in e-mobility
With this procurement, the e-conversion of the fleet, which began in 2019, will be systematically continued. The quiet, emission-free trolleybuses already characterise the cityscape of Salzburg today - by 2032, they could form the backbone of the city's public transport system. The new vehicles boast state-of-the-art technology, greater comfort for passengers and improved working conditions for drivers. The first delivery of eight e-buses is planned for November 2024 to February 2025, with twelve more already in preparation.
Comfort for passengers - relief for the climate
In addition to the ecological impact - zero local emissions, less noise, no fossil fuels - users also benefit directly: air-conditioned passenger compartments, more accessible entrances and modern interior fittings not only make travelling more pleasant, but also more inclusive. The frequency will also be improved: with the expansion of lines 9, 10 and 12 to a 10-minute rhythm, more vehicles are needed - so the investment has come at just the right time.
A clear course for Salzburg's transport strategy
"This modern bus fleet is an essential part of our long-term vision for Salzburg's public transport," explain Salzburg-Linien Managing Director Gerlinde Hagler and Managing Director Reinhard Gassner.
"With the new vehicles, we are not only increasing the reliability and resilience of our services, but also actively shaping a sustainable future for Salzburg's mobility."
We think it's #schongenial when every emission-free journey is a step towards a cleaner, quieter and more liveable Salzburg.
