There is always a story behind every cup of coffee, but it often remains undiscovered. One such story can be found in Hannes Schlögl's coffee roastery in Oeynhausen, the first CO2-neutral coffee roastery in Europe, where coffee culture meets environmental awareness.
Showcase project for sustainable coffee enjoyment
What makes this roastery special is its partnership with EZA Fairer Handel and Fairtrade Austria, through which it sources coffee beans from the BOCU coffee co-operative. This cooperative is actively working to adapt coffee cultivation to the increasingly unpredictable growing conditions caused by climate change, while at the same time achieving fair prices for the farmers.
CO2-neutral coffee roasting
The roasting plant in Oyenhausen also stands for a climate-friendly roasting method that even makes the coffee CO2-neutral.Hannes Schlögl has managed to make the entire roasting process as environmentally friendly as possible. The process, which not only perfects the coffee beans in the drum roasting process, but also purifies the exhaust air using an innovative biological system, demonstrates the sustainable approach that the roastery pursues. Instead of simply blowing harmful emissions into the air, they are broken down by microbes in a bunker-like building, making the roastery CO2-neutral.
The result is a climate-neutral coffee roastery that shows that sustainable coffee enjoyment is possible without compromising on quality and flavour.
