This poses a major challenge for deaf people. The Upper Austrian Red Cross is now taking an important step towards accessibility and integrating the DEC112 emergency call app as a new standard for people with hearing impairments.
From fax to modern app - a milestone for greater safety
Until now, deaf people could send a text message to 0800 133 133 or send a fax to the control centre in an emergency. However, communication by fax is cumbersome and slow. That is why this service is now being replaced by the digital emergency call app DEC112 (Digital Emergency Call). The app makes it quick and easy to contact the rescue coordination centre - without having to speak or listen.
After registering once and authorising location access, an emergency call can be made at the touch of a button. The app immediately sends the exact location and, if required, important health data to the rescue centre (144) or mountain rescue service (140).
Chat function and translation for greater comprehensibility
Another advantage: users can communicate directly with the control centre via an integrated chat function until the emergency services arrive. The app also offers automatic translation, which also overcomes language barriers.
Fax emergency call ends on 31 March 2025
The DEC112 app is already active and can be downloaded free of charge to all smartphones. The fax emergency call of the OÖ. Red Cross will finally be discontinued on 31 March 2025. Red Cross President Gottfried Hirz emphasises:
"We are relying on modern technology to enable everyone to receive help quickly and safely."
